Flashcards for the three externally examined NCEA Level 3 Physics achievement standards, split into wave systems (91523), mechanical systems (91524) and electrical systems (91526), and then by topic within each. Each formula card says whether it is given in the standard's own relationships list or is one to recall.

Adding it gives you your own copy, with every subdeck below. Each card then comes back just before you would forget it, and every one you get right or wrong counts towards your mastery of its topic. You can delete or suspend the parts you are not studying once it is yours.

Some of its cards

  • What is the centre of mass of a system of particles?
The single point at which the whole mass of the system can be considered to act, found from the mass-weighted average position of all the particles
  • What is a standing (stationary) wave?
A wave pattern formed by the superposition of two waves of the same frequency and amplitude travelling in opposite directions
  • What is the formula relating the arc length dd travelled and the angle θ\theta turned through, for a point at radius rr from the axis of rotation?
    d=rθd = r\theta
  • What two conditions must be satisfied for an oscillation to be simple harmonic motion?
The acceleration must be proportional to the displacement from equilibrium, and it must always be directed towards the equilibrium position
  • What is the Doppler effect?
The change in observed frequency of a wave when the source and observer are moving relative to each other
  • What direction does the centripetal acceleration of an object moving in a circle at constant speed point?
Towards the centre of the circle
  • What condition must two sources of waves meet for a stable interference pattern to be seen?
    They must be coherent
  • What are beats?
A periodic rise and fall in loudness heard when two sounds of slightly different frequencies are heard together
  • What is magnetic flux?
A measure of the total magnetic field passing through a given area
  • What is the peak value of an alternating quantity?
The maximum value it reaches during a cycle
