A primeira anotação

Polynomials / Quadratics

The quadratic formula

A quadratic is an expression ax2+bx+cax^2 + bx + c with a≠0a \neq 0. The equation ax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0 has solutions

x=−b±b2−4ac2a. x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}.

The formula comes from completing the square (below), so it works for every quadratic, including those that do not factorise over the integers.

Solve 2x2−3x−5=02x^2 - 3x - 5 = 0. Here a=2a = 2, b=−3b = -3, c=−5c = -5, so b2−4ac=9+40=49b^2 - 4ac = 9 + 40 = 49 and

x=3±74,so x=52 or x=−1. x = \frac{3 \pm 7}{4}, \quad\text{so } x = \tfrac{5}{2} \text{ or } x = -1.

Substituting x=−1x = -1 gives 2+3−5=02 + 3 - 5 = 0, which checks the signs.

Completing the square

Writing x2+pxx^2 + px as (x+p2)2−p24\left(x + \tfrac{p}{2}\right)^2 - \tfrac{p^2}{4} turns a quadratic into one squared bracket plus a constant.

x2+6x+2=(x+3)2−9+2=(x+3)2−7. x^2 + 6x + 2 = (x + 3)^2 - 9 + 2 = (x + 3)^2 - 7.

When the coefficient of x2x^2 is not 1, take it out of the first two terms first:

3x2−12x+5=3(x2−4x)+5=3[(x−2)2−4]+5=3(x−2)2−7. \begin{aligned} 3x^2 - 12x + 5 &= 3(x^2 - 4x) + 5 \\ &= 3\left[(x - 2)^2 - 4\right] + 5 \\ &= 3(x - 2)^2 - 7. \end{aligned}

A squared bracket is never negative, so 3(x−2)2−7≥−73(x-2)^2 - 7 \geq -7 for every real xx, with equality at x=2x = 2. The minimum value of the quadratic is therefore −7-7, reached at x=2x = 2. In general a(x+h)2+ka(x + h)^2 + k has its turning point at (−h,k)(-h, k), which is a minimum if a>0a > 0 and a maximum if a<0a < 0.

Applying the same steps to ax2+bx+cax^2 + bx + c gives

a(x+b2a)2+c−b24a, a\left(x + \frac{b}{2a}\right)^2 + c - \frac{b^2}{4a},

so the axis of symmetry is x=−b2ax = -\dfrac{b}{2a}. Setting the expression to zero and taking square roots gives the quadratic formula.

The discriminant

The quantity Δ=b2−4ac\Delta = b^2 - 4ac sits under the square root in the formula, and its sign decides how many real roots there are.

Value of Δ\DeltaReal rootsGraph of y=ax2+bx+cy = ax^2 + bx + c
Δ>0\Delta > 0two distinctcrosses the xx-axis twice
Δ=0\Delta = 0one repeatedtouches the xx-axis at its turning point
Δ<0\Delta < 0nonestays entirely above or entirely below the axis

A condition on Δ\Delta is a condition on a parameter. For x2+kx+(k+3)=0x^2 + kx + (k + 3) = 0,

Δ=k2−4(k+3)=k2−4k−12=(k−6)(k+2). \Delta = k^2 - 4(k + 3) = k^2 - 4k - 12 = (k - 6)(k + 2).

There are two distinct real roots when k<−2k < -2 or k>6k > 6, one repeated root when k=−2k = -2 or k=6k = 6, and none when −2<k<6-2 < k < 6. At k=6k = 6 the equation is x2+6x+9=(x+3)2=0x^2 + 6x + 9 = (x + 3)^2 = 0, which confirms it.

If Δ<0\Delta < 0 and a>0a > 0 the quadratic is positive for every real xx, and if Δ<0\Delta < 0 and a<0a < 0 it is negative for every real xx. A statement such as "x2+kx+4>0x^2 + kx + 4 > 0 for all xx" therefore means k2−16<0k^2 - 16 < 0, that is −4<k<4-4 < k < 4.

Tangency and the discriminant

A line meets a parabola where the two equations are equal, which gives a quadratic in xx. The line is a tangent exactly when that quadratic has a repeated root, so Δ=0\Delta = 0.

Find cc so that y=4x+cy = 4x + c touches y=x2+2x+5y = x^2 + 2x + 5. Setting them equal gives x2−2x+(5−c)=0x^2 - 2x + (5 - c) = 0, so

Δ=4−4(5−c)=4c−16=0,c=4. \Delta = 4 - 4(5 - c) = 4c - 16 = 0, \quad c = 4.

The repeated root is x=1x = 1, where both curves have height 8, so the touching point is (1,8)(1, 8).

Sum and product of roots

If α\alpha and β\beta are the roots of ax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0 then ax2+bx+c=a(x−α)(x−β)ax^2 + bx + c = a(x - \alpha)(x - \beta), and comparing coefficients gives

α+β=−ba,αβ=ca. \alpha + \beta = -\frac{b}{a}, \qquad \alpha\beta = \frac{c}{a}.

These let an expression in the roots be found without solving. For x2−5x+3=0x^2 - 5x + 3 = 0,

α2+β2=(α+β)2−2αβ=25−6=19. \alpha^2 + \beta^2 = (\alpha + \beta)^2 - 2\alpha\beta = 25 - 6 = 19.

They also build an equation from given roots: a quadratic with roots α+1\alpha + 1 and β+1\beta + 1 has sum α+β+2=7\alpha + \beta + 2 = 7 and product αβ+α+β+1=9\alpha\beta + \alpha + \beta + 1 = 9, so it is x2−7x+9=0x^2 - 7x + 9 = 0.

Hidden quadratics

An equation that is not quadratic in xx may be quadratic in a function of xx. Substituting that function, solving, and then reversing the substitution is the method.

  • x4−5x2+4=0x^4 - 5x^2 + 4 = 0 is quadratic in u=x2u = x^2, giving u2−5u+4=0u^2 - 5u + 4 = 0, so u=1u = 1 or 44 and x=±1x = \pm 1 or ±2\pm 2.
  • x−5x+6=0x - 5\sqrt{x} + 6 = 0 is quadratic in u=xu = \sqrt{x}, giving u=2u = 2 or 33, so x=4x = 4 or 99. Since u=xu = \sqrt{x} must be non-negative, both are accepted.
  • 22x−3⋅2x+2=02^{2x} - 3\cdot 2^x + 2 = 0 is quadratic in u=2xu = 2^x, giving u=1u = 1 or 22, so x=0x = 0 or 11. A value u≤0u \leq 0 would have to be rejected, because 2x2^x is always positive.

The last step matters: each solution for uu has to be checked against what uu is allowed to be before it is turned back into xx.
