Common questions

How many characters is a UCAS personal statement?

4,000 characters across all three answers, including spaces, with at least 350 characters in each answer. How the 4,000 is shared between the three is up to you.

Can I change my personal statement after I send it?

No. One statement goes to all five of your choices and UCAS does not let you change it once the application is submitted, so if something important changes, contact the universities directly.

What are the three personal statement questions?

From 2026 entry onwards the statement is three answers rather than one essay: “Why do you want to study this course or subject?”, “How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?”, “What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?”.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes. UCAS’s limit includes spaces, which is why a character count runs out sooner than people expect from a word count. This counter also counts each line break as a character, so if anything it tells you that you are nearer the limit than you are.

How many words is 4,000 characters?

Usually somewhere around 550 to 700 words in total, depending on how long the words are. The limit is in characters, so the character count is the one to watch.
