  • How is compound interest different from simple interest?
    Compound interest is also paid on interest already earned, so the amount added grows each year.
  • What does a map scale of 1 : 50 000 mean?
    1 cm on the map stands for 50 000 cm (500 m) on the ground.
  • What fraction is 0.375?
    38\frac{3}{8}
  • What does 'give your answer in terms of π\pi' mean?
    Leave π\pi as a symbol, as in 25π25\pi, instead of using a decimal value.
  • What does the symbol ≠\neq mean?
    Is not equal to
  • What is the area of a triangle?
    12×base×perpendicular height\frac{1}{2} \times \text{base} \times \text{perpendicular height}
  • Which side of a right-angled triangle is the hypotenuse?
    The longest side, opposite the right angle
  • How do you estimate the answer to a calculation?
    Round every number to 1 significant figure, then work it out.
